Managing your research and bibliographies - HOW DO I CHOOSE?
This session will quickly compare the three major options for bibliographic management software - RefWorks, EndNote and Zotero - and help you decide which is right for you. All the tools have their own strengths, and the important thing is that you use something, so come do a little comparison shopping with us.

Finding Books and Articles
Discover the advantages of using NYU Libraries' resources over Google and other Web search engines. Learn how to find books and articles using BobCat, NYU Libraries' search system. For deeper article searching, learn about the Libraries' subscription databases (there are more than 1,000) and how to identify the databases most relevant to your research topic. Plus, discover techniques for searching effectively within databases and guidelines for critically evaluating the information you find. (60 min.)

RefWorks
RefWorks is a web-based tool, free to members of the NYU community, that helps manage and organize your research. As you search catalogs and databases, you can import references directly into your own bibliography file then automatically format footnotes, endnotes, and works cited using standard styles (MLA, APA, etc.) Learn how to use RefWorks features such as RefShare (facilitates data sharing and collaboration) and the built-in RSS feed reader. Mathematica, a mathematical analysis software package, is used in scientific, engineering, and mathematical fields as well as other areas of technical computing. This tutorial will provide an introduction to some of the many uses of the software package. No prior experience is necessary.

Atlas.ti - Introduction
An introduction to the qualitative software package Atlas.ti; it is a versatile workbench for the qualitative analysis of large bodies of textual, graphical, audio, and video data. An overview of the tools it offers for accomplishing the tasks associated with any systematic approach to unstructured data will be included.

A Hands-On Introduction to PASW/SPSS
Come and learn about PASW (formerly SPSS), the statistical analysis package, and how manage a quantitative dataset. Attendees will participate in a hands-on session that will include downloading and merging data files from two archives, ICPSR and WHO. There will be a focus on data cleaning and the session will be concluded with some introductory analysis and the exportation of a finished dataset. No experience in PASW/SPSS is required.

A Hands-On Introduction to SAS
Come and learn about SAS, the statistical analysis package, and participate in a hands-on session that uses the software. Continuing from where session 1, a hands-on introduction to PASW/SPSS, left off, the dataset created in the earlier session will be imported into SAS and missing values will be analyzed and imputed. Further statistical analysis will be conducted and graphics, including thematic maps, will be created. Neither experience with SAS nor attending session 1 is required.

An Introduction to Time Series and Panel Data Analysis with Stata
Come and learn about Time Series and Panel data analysis using Stata. You will get to learn how to test the time series properties of data and also the Engle-Granger error correction modeling as well as post regression testing. In panel data analysis you will learn how to do Hausman Specification test, panel regression, some post estimation tests and their solutions. Basic knowledge of the theory on Time Series and Panel analysis is recommended to better comprehend the session.

An Applied Introduction to R
Come and learn about R, the open source statistical analysis package, and participate in an applied session based off of Dr. Elena Cunningham's research on the spatial memory of Madagascar Lemurs. An overview of Dr. Cunningham's project will be supplied and a problem will be presented. As a group we will propose a solution, write it in R and run some sample statistical tests on the newly created data. No experience with R is required and only basic mathematical and programming topics will be utilized.

An Introduction to ArcGIS
Come and learn about GIS and mapmaking using the ESRI's ArcView software. Attendees will participate in a hands-on session that will include downloading dataset from the Bytes of the Big Apple (New York City Department of City Planning). The emphasis will be given on various components of a basic thematic map. Attendees will be exposed to various resources and training material. No experience in GIS is required.

An Introduction to Geocoding
