Extensive Tour: Physical & Virtual Tour of the Library

A 30-min. "driving tour" of NYU Libraries' web site will acquaint you with the Libraries' catalog/databases and introduce you to services such as reference, Ask-a-Librarian, and interlibrary loan. A 30-min. walking tour follows to help you get your physical bearings around Bobst. (60 min.)

Finding Books and Articles

Discover the advantages of using NYU Libraries' resources over Google and other Web search engines. Learn how to find books and articles using BobCat, NYU Libraries' search system. For deeper article searching, learn about the Libraries' subscription databases (there are more than 1,000) and how to identify the databases most relevant to your research topic. Plus, discover techniques for searching effectively within databases and guidelines for critically evaluating the information you find. (60 min.)

RefWorks

RefWorks is a web-based tool, free to members of the NYU community, that helps manage and organize your research. As you search catalogs and databases, you can import references directly into your own bibliography file then automatically format footnotes, endnotes, and works cited using standard styles (MLA, APA, etc.) Learn how to use RefWorks features such as RefShare (facilitates data sharing and collaboration) and the built-in RSS feed reader. Intro to EndNote

E-Book Collections

This session provides an introduction to the library's full-text e-book collections -- multidisciplinary, reference, and subject-focused (history, literature, science, technology). There is special focus on ebrary, our largest academic collection, and its many new features, including options for highlighting and note-taking, storing page markers, and saving to a virtual bookshelf. Finding New York City and New York State Statistics

This session will focus on strategies for locating statistics about New York City and New York State. A number of resources will be highlighted as well. What is Atlantic History

Professor Karen O. Kupperman will be speaking informally on the topic “What is Atlantic History” on Monday, November 9, 2009 in the Bobst Library’s Reference Conference Room at 1:00 pm. An introduction to the qualitative software package Atlas.ti; it is a versatile workbench for the qualitative analysis of large bodies of textual, graphical, audio, and video data.
